Ask any Brian Eno fan about his four "lyrical" albums of the 1970's, and most will say that "Another Green World" is the masterpiece of the bunch. Don't believe them. The third of Eno's pop albums to come out, it had a tough act to follow, seeing as how his previous album, "Taking Tiger Mountain," is one of the best albums ever released. This is the first album where Eno begins to experiment with the ambient music that would later come to dominate his career. Most of the tracks are instrumentals that slowly build up in intensity. Some of them even sound like the titles (i.e. when listening to the song "Little Fishes" you can almost see fish swimming around), making this album almost like a musical painting. However, it's ambient and experimental sounds do grow a bit tiresome, especially on the latter half of the album. The only song truly worth mentioning is "St. Elmo's Fire" which features a spectacular Robert Fripp guitar solo and hauntingly calm lyrics. All in all, it is still recommended, but for the best of Eno look to his other three works, "Warm Jets," "Tiger Mountain," and "Before/After Science."
