Taking a cue from other audio cut-up acts, notably Negativland, Evolution Control Committee of Columbus, OH had been taking razor blade to tape and Control-V to digital audio files for a number of years before making the national news over legal troubles with the song "Rocked By Rape." Double the Phat and Still Tasteless is ECC's first CD release, previously working solely in the cassette medium. Although it shares many of the same lyrical concerns and potential legal problems as Negativland, they lean more towards hip-hop at times (even including skits in the form of an ongoing serial taken from Mark Gunderson's personal answering machine). Gunderson is also a far better singer than Negativland's David Wills, which makes the overall experience more clever than amusing; you be the judge as to which is better. Each copy ships inside the empty shell of an old 5.25" floppy, and the first 64 copies shipped with the floppy drive, too. ~ Sean Carruthers, All Music Guide
