Critic's Review:
"Look Ahead" from 1968 marked Pat Boone's last album for Dot Records concluding an association which lasted for more than 13 years. The album stands as one of the most stylish and accomplished works of his career and goes a long way in compensating for an inconsistent 60's decade. It was recorded in Nashville and was produced and arranged by Anita Kerr whose distinctive talents are so thoroughly interwoven through it that it would be difficult to separate the album's artistic merits from her all-embracing role. The smooth and lightly lilting sound that is Anita Kerr's trademark is abundantly evident throughout the album. With this as the solid foundation from which this work is built, and maybe because the venue was Nashville and it was Pat Boone's final act in the Dot Records stage of his career, everything just flows effortlessly and falls beautifully in place. There is a warmth and a joy you can feel that carries through the entire album. Anita Kerr opines on the liner notes that "Pat's singing on this album is truly the greatest ever". But kudos go to Ms. Kerr for the masterful and polished handling that allows Boone's singing to dominate, but ever so gently. "Look Ahead" offers a generous taste of how smooth and how appealing the "Nashville Sound" can be. The album is by far the best Country work Pat Boone has ever done. He says farewell to Dot Records 'standin' tall and lookin' good' - with a top notch effort. "Look Ahead" is one of a handful of Boone's 1960's albums that needs to be reissued on cd in its entirety. ~ Arthur Rowe, All Music Guide
