This band is the brainchild of one Johnny Fisher, an L.A.-based producer and remixer who also writes songs and plays guitar. The band's full-length debut betrays several decades' worth of influences, from snotty post-punk ("Love and Attention" sounds like an outtake from an early Psychedelic Furs album) to 1980s new wave ("Station") and 1970s weirdo art rock (an okay cover version of Brian Eno's "Baby's on Fire"). There's an interesting tension here between the band's affection for splayed, messy guitar sounds and cymbal-heavy drumming and its obviously shared devotion to studiocraft. When that tension breaks, the results can be pretty interesting, as on the cathedral-sized sonic space of "Mind Over Matter" and the bizarrely monaural "You." Fisher sings like a cross between Richard Butler and John Lydon, and his nasal blurt gets a bit tiresome by the end of the album, but overall this is a very impressive debut. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
