Johnny O'Neal was 26 when he recorded this set, his recording debut as a leader. Since bassist Ray Brown had helped encourage him, it was only right that the pianist asked Brown to join his trio (which also includes drummer Frank Severino) for the album. O'Neal, a member of the Jazz Messengers at the time, often sounds close to Oscar Peterson (his main influence) on a fine program whose highlights include "It Could Happen to You," "Sometimes I'm Happy," and Brown's "Devastation Blues." Even the trio's version of "Just the Way You Are" comes across well on this straight-ahead set. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
