Three veteran jazz musicians who settled in Portland, OR are featured on this unusual CD, which includes tenor sax, piano and drums, playing a mix of mostly obscure tunes from the 1950s and '60s. While tenor saxophonist and leader John Gross and drummer Charlie Doggett aren't as widely known as veteran pianist Dave Frishberg, their chemistry together is terrific. It seems likely that Frishberg chose many of the songs (and probably played several of them with their respective composers decades ago), with a healthy dose of Billy Strayhorn (always a favorite of the pianist) and Al Cohn. Gross' sensitive interpretation of "The Star Crossed Lovers" and laconic treatment of Gary McFarland's blues "Blue Hodge" are highlights, while Frishberg's romp through Strayhorn's "Johnny Come Lately" makes it obvious that the lack of a bassist was not a problem for anyone.
