This straight CD reissue of a 1983 Stash studio session differs in only one aspect from the original LP; pianist Jimmy Rowles, rather than young alto saxophonist Michael Hashim, gets top billing on the cover. This was more of a marketing matter, as Rowles was obviously far more widely known than an artist making his debut as a leader. In any case, the music swings nicely, as the two are joined by seasoned bassist Michael Moore and a fine up-and-coming drummer, Joey Baron. Highlights include a bossa nova arrangement of "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," Duke Ellington's infrequently performed gem "I Didn't Know About You," and an especially poignant take of Rowles' gorgeous ballad "The Peacocks." Rowles and company provide superb accompaniment for Hashim (who also shines), though he has only recorded sporadically as a leader following three additional dates for the label. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
