Critic's Review:
With covers of early rock/R&B staples by Little Richard, John Lee Hooker, and Carl Perkins as well as somewhat poppier but still fairly rocking Tex-Mex-flavored material, Gilmer did at least prove that he had an appetite for tougher stuff than "Sugar Shack" might have you believe. There were problems with this approach, however. Gilmer's rather gentle delivery wasn't entirely suited for bluesy stuff -- British groups, by this time knocking stars like Gilmer off the chart, did it far better; and the more poppish cuts, while pleasant, weren't so great. It's a better record than you might expect, though, as its idiosyncratic Norman Petty Tex-Mex production at least made it sound a bit different from most the run-of-the-mill LPs by generic mid-'60s American acts. It's been combined with another 1965 LP, Folkbeat, onto one CD by Ace Records. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
