With an album dominated by folk material from the likes of Bob Dylan, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Tom Paxton -- at a point where rock treatments of such writers were still fairly unusual -- Gilmer proved that he was hipper than almost anyone could have guessed. (Gilmer, in fact, was a good friend of Carolyn Hester, who knew Dylan well in the early 1960s.) The record is okay, the usual accomplished Norman Petty production giving a Tex-Mex shuffle to the arrangements. But Gilmer's vocal limitations ensured that he could not have been a major folk-rocker, and the execution, while tasteful, is not remarkably original. It's been combined with another 1965 LP, Lucky 'Leven, onto one CD by Ace Records. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
