Ian Dogole's percussion adds color to a versatile and intriguing septet also including reeds, flugelhorn, piano, viola, bass and drums. In addition to Dogole (who plays mbira, the African talking drum, udu, caxixi, dumbek, native American Indiana drums and what is called a global drum set), Sheldon Brown on bass clarinet, flute, soprano and tenor is a particularly major voice on this project. The group performs "Afro Blue," a tribute to Sun Ra ("Pyramids Of Pluto"), Ornette Coleman's "Turnaround," a tribute to Miles Davis' fusion period (how many musicians cover "Bitches Brew?") and four additional originals. This music can be called "world jazz" or "world fusion" although all of the instruments (other than Gary Fisher's occasional synthesizer) are acoustic and there are some straightahead tracks, particularly the blues "Turnaround." There is enough variety and color (along with consistency) to make this a highly recommended set of modern jazz by musicians who deserve to be much better known. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
