Hank Jones is always in top form and this 1978 trio date with bassist George Duvivier and drummer Alan Dawson, one of several that the group made for Black & Blue in the late '70s, is no exception. The trio's romp through "A Foggy Day" features a lively exchange between Jones and Dawson. Jones' lyrical "Angel Face" and jaunty "Hank's Blues" are excellent examples of his abilities as a composer. "Yours in My Heart Alone" had long since fallen out of favor by the time the pianist chose it for this session, but powered by Dawson's brushes and Duvivier's fluid bassline, Jones proves that there is plenty of life left in this old chestnut. "Alan's Allies" is a showcase for the phenomenal Alan Dawson, one of the most underrated drummers in jazz, though he was no secret among those who played with him. A Foggy Day was reissued on CD by Black & Blue as Compassion in 1997, adding several alternate takes from the session. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
