At the time of their formation the Either/Orchestra asked, "Why should a seven-horn band only limit themselves in ensembles to playing three basic parts (for trumpets, trombones, and reeds) when having seven parts would be much more exciting?" Gradual tempo changes within a song; the use of emotional outbursts, humor, and group improvising; and the ability to look both backwards and forwards stylistically at the same time are qualities that make the Either/Orchestra a logical outgrowth of Charles Mingus' innovations. This CD is full of extroverted solos, wild group interplay, hard-swinging and unpredictable performances, and quite a bit of variety. Even with the many strong solos, it is the occasionally overcrowded ensembles of the stimulating group that stick in one's mind. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
