A guitar workout from note one, Sticky Fingers is comprised entirely of classic instrumentals given the Earl "Chinna" Smith treatment. Every cut features Smith on both rhythm and lead guitar as well as some of Jamaica's best sessionmen, including Robbie Shakespeare, Sly Dunbar, Winston Wright, Tommy McCook, and Bobby Ellis. Fans of rockers reggae should find this material enjoyable, though the fact that Smith solos through the duration of every track, instead of bowing out for others or even allowing a groove to get established, simply gets tedious after a few cuts. What's potentially confusing about this release is the remix credit given to King Jammy, as there is nothing resembling dub on this record in any way, shape, or form. It seems the credit was either an outright mistake or Jammy simply engineered Smith's overdubbed guitar solos. Also of note is the session's confusing 1994 copyright date. Much of this material actually dates back to the mid- and late '70s, as evidenced by the distinct lack of electronics and Bunny Lee's "flying cymbal" production. Regardless, this is a release perhaps best suited for listeners already in love with Smith's guitar solos, as there is little else on the record. ~ Brandon Burke, All Music Guide
