Critic's Review:
The acoustic instrumentation and singer Randall Throckmorton's crooning falsetto may recall turn-of-the-20th-century parlor music, but these 13 songs betray an irony that's genuinely of the here and now. Accomplished musicianship and exceptional material make it work. Songs about birth, death, madness, magic hammers, and sirens luring senior citizens to "Key Largo" sound perfectly at home next to traditional klezmer tunes, a rendition of Ary Barroso's "Brazil," and two wedding songs written by and for accordionist Bob Barnes' own ceremony. In their unique, restless music, the Deadly Nightshade Family Singers wed the old and new with a talent that transcends both fashion and the limitations of the 78 rpm phonographic record. Sometimes dark, sometimes sweet, Plain Brown Suit is infinitely more interesting than its title suggests. ~ Brian Beatty, All Music Guide
