Tenor-saxophonist Billy Pierce, best-known for his associations with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and Tony Williams, has a reputation as a strong hard bop-based improviser. This release from CIMP, which he co-leads with drummer Chris McCann, is a bit unusual for Pierce is heard in a sparse setting, a trio with McCann and bassist Steve Wallace. Pierce, who switches to soprano on Duke Ellington's obscure "Gypsy Without A Song," tis inspired to stretch himself throughout the nine selections. With a fresh repertoire also including Billy Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge," Thelonious Monk's "Epistrophy," tunes by Charlie Rouse, Sam Rivers and Mulgrew Miller, some obscurities and one original ("Chuck's Groove" by Pierce), the trio does not have to worry about paying tributes or recreating definitive versions. Each of the musicians constantly react to each other and it is a pleasure to hear Billy Pierce coming up with new and inventive ideas throughout the stimulating set. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
