amg review
This is an effective single-CD sampling of the innovative pianist Bud Powell, although collectors will want to get the much more valuable four-CD "complete" Blue Note set, which is easily available. Powell is heard in trios dating from 1947 (originally out on Roulette), 1951, 1953 and 1958. In addition, he takes the intriguing "Bud on Bach" solo and jams "Wail" and "Dance of the Infidels" with a 1949 quintet also including trumpeter Fats Navarro and tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins. Not all of the classics are here (including "Tempus Fugit," "Celia," "Bouncing with Bud" and "Un Poco Loco"), but the release can act as an introduction to beginners not familiar with the founder of bebop piano. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
