Strange Brew

Critics' Reviews

amg review
The success of the McKenzies' first album put the pressure on for a follow-up, but Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas focused their energy on a Bob & Doug MacKenzie movie instead. This, then, is the "soundtrack" of the resulting movie, Strange Brew. The thing is, though there are some dialogue snippets from the movie included on this release, this is really more of a second comedy album using the movie as a starting point for skits, no matter how much they try to deny it on the album and in the liner notes. Because it's all related to the movie, this album actually has far more focus than the first one, though if you're not really into the movie connection there's really not going to be a lot here of interest. If you've seen the movie and want to know how "The Mutants of 2051 AD" actually ended, though, this is worth tracking down. The pair also takes a song and do their patter over the instrumental breaks, though this time they rely on Dave Thomas' brother, Ian, for the music. ~ Sean Carruthers, Rovi
