Rank this multi-instrumentalist/composer right alongside artists like Baaba Maal and Youssou N'Dour among the finest artists the West African music scene has to offer. Like those Afro-pop legends, Diallo has an irresistably buoyant voice that lifts every rousing riff on its shoulders and carries it into a lively hall where it practically dares you not to dance. Whether singing in Fula, Malinke, Susu, or French, Diallo's positive vibrations and conscious lyrics (translated in the liner notes) keep you smiling as the pulsating grooves take control of your body and command it to move in time to the rhythms. But he's also a master musician, playing guitar, bass, and percussion as he leads his razor-sharp ensemble through an exhilarating nine-song set. Nearly every song here is a delight, but highlights include "Fissiriwaly," which sounds like Burning Spear if he'd come from Africa instead of Jamaica; the mystical Mandingo funk of "Badenma"; and "Kakende," an acoustic instrumental. An infectious album with something for everyone, The Message deserves to make Diallo an international superstar. ~ Bret Love, All Music Guide
