Happily, 7 Seconds abandoned the wimpy alternative rock approach of its late-'80s recordings and returned to a hard-edged sound on the metallic Out the Shizzy. Of course, it could be argued that the band was merely retreating to its roots in light of the newly punk-friendly climate of 1993 -- the bandmembers even sound as if they've been listening to Green Day (which, in turn, was likely inspired by early 7 Seconds) -- but Kevin Seconds' knack for writing strong melodies has always carried his band's best work, and it still does here. ~ Andy Hinds, All Music Guide
