Radiohead's DIY Album
Strategy: With major labels scrambling to reinvent their business and
artists wondering which record company's lifeboats might float, Radiohead took
artistic independence to a nervy new frontier, releasing their new "In Rainbows"
album on the Web and letting their fans set their own price. Did the band go out
of business? Hardly. By placing confidence in their fans' consciences, they may
have reaped a variable harvest, but they proved the album is hardly dead for
bands with vision.
