Also: History of Palme d'Or

First awarded in 1955, Cannes' highest honor -- the Palme d'Or -- is now considered one of cinema's most prestigious awards. Each year, a jury made up of international industry heavies (this year's group includes jury president Sean PennNatalie Portman, Marjane Satrapi ("Persepolis") and more) watches a selective lineup of "in competition" films from all over the world. After two weeks of screenings, the jury bestows the Palme d'Or (among other awards) in a ceremony that rivals the Oscars in terms of glitz.

This year, 22 films will compete for the Palme d'Or, which will be handed out on Sunday, May 25, 2008. Until then, here is a list of the films -- some adored, some loathed and many controversial -- that have won the award since its inception.
