The subgenre of tributes to abused mothers finds an acutely heartfelt example in this frank Christina Aguilera number about watching as a violent father "took his anger out on her face" while the victim "kept all of ... moreher pain locked away" for the sake of the children, "believing the lies and trying to hide/ covering the cuts and bruises." And having summoned the strength to leave ("She could have died/ Fighting for the lives of her children"), she's rewarded by a song in which her daughter pledges that "he'll never hurt us again" and a simple declaration at the song's end: "I love you, mom."
