"Rock Star:INXS" is a show about a lot of things. It's about a
group of young musical artists trying to fulfill their dreams. It's
about the joy of performance and the difficulty of competition. But
most of all, it's about finding the next incarnation of one of the
greatest rock bands in history.
From their first gig in Sydney's Northern beaches in August 1977,
Michael Hutchence, Kirk Pengilly, Garry Beers, Tim Farriss, Andrew
Farriss and Jon Farriss quickly won over their native Australia,
then the world. Indeed, in less than a decade after that first gig,
INXS was hailed by major music
journals as being, with U2 and Guns N' Roses, one of the three
biggest bands in the world.
They performed before gauchos in Buenos Aires, Royals in
Melbourne and teens in Tokyo, headlining for 75,000 at Wembley
Stadium and playing to 100,000 at Rock In Rio. They scored 17
Billboard hits, seven of which were top tens, and accumulated six
consecutive Top Ten U.K. and U.S. albums, seven MTV awards, three
Grammy nominations, and No. #1 albums all over the world.
However, the tragic death of Michael Hutchence in November 1997
had a profound impact on the members of INXS, who had been close
friends and collaborators for two full decades. The future of the
band was very much uncertain, as millions of fans around the globe
waited for word.
Then, eighteen months later, with guest vocalist Terence Trent D'Arby, INXS returned to
the concert stage, officially opening Sydney's Olympic Stadium with
a blistering performance before 90,000 fans and a vast television
audience. Since then, INXS' lifetime total album sales have climbed
past the extraordinary number of 30 million, as they've toured
around the world with a variety of guest singers and been inducted
into the ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association) Hall Of Fame.
After more than 25 years of such immense accomplishments, many
bands would choose to rest on their laurels. But instead, INXS
decided that they were ready for a bold and unprecedented next step.
With the help of producer Mark Burnett, they launched a global
search to find their next true lead singer, and "Rock Star:INXS" was
born. Now, 15 superb young talents will compete to join one of
rock's greatest bands and kick off a whole new set of triumphs.
As INXS themselves will tell you, it's been an amazing journey so
far, but it isn't close to over yet.
