Rolling Stones co-founder Brian Jones recruited Mick Jagger and Ian Stewart (who would remain an unofficial but frequent studio and stage ally) to join what evolved into the Stones in 1962.  Beyond his role as rhythm guitarist, Jones added dulcimer, sitar, mandolin, keyboards and wind instruments to the band's guitar-based arrangements. His early death in 1969, less than a month after the band unveiled plans to recruit a new guitarist for their pending '69 U.S. tour.  (King Collection/Retna UK)
