Viva la vida, mates! The 51st Grammys celebrated life, longtime legends -- and just enough upstarts and upsets to keep things interesting. And along the way, the real interesting stuff. Here, some of our favorite highlights -- and lowlights:

Most puzzling leg grab: Presenter Whitney Houston, sliding her hand to the top of her (admittedly sleek) thigh and saying she'd wished she'd worn her boots. With that dress?

The honey, you were supposed to pull that off at the restaurant! award: Winner Jennifer Hudson's peculiar napkinlike bib atop her otherwise sleek sheath (but we loved her teary shout-out to her family "in heaven and here on earth").

Heaviest unspoken event of the evening: The late-breaking news out of Los Angeles that R&B star and Grammy nominee Chris Brown was being sought in a "domestic violence battery" incident, and, separately, that his girlfriend, Rihanna, also a Grammy nominee, would suddenly not be performing at the Grammy show. Gulp.

Boy's got chops: Justin Timberlake went all blue-eyed soul with Al Green on "Let's Stay Together," matching him croon for croon.

Flying body slam: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's reading of the roster of performers, mentioning Paul McCartney and Dave Grohl, as ... the Beatle Fighters. Um ... we thought the writers' strike was over.

Best channeling of a Caesars Palace waitress, circa 1981: Paula Abdul, wearing a high hairpiece and a shocking-yellow, metallic-striped Grecian goddess getup. Make mine a Harvey Wallbanger ...

Highest hair: Extra-special recognition to Cyndi Lauper (she's so vertical!), Janelle Monae and a very goth-looking Lisa Rinna. On the other hand, erstwhile "American Idol" contender Justin Guarini downsized his manic mane and looked positively buttoned-down.

Hard country?: Carrie Underwood can belt with the best of them, but she sounded like the Heart girls, not exactly country by even the most wide-open definition.
