Anne arrives at the Venice Film Festival.

For Anne Hathaway, timing is everything. On Wednesday, just as Vanity Fair published an in-depth piece on her four-year relationship with now-jailed ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri, she hit the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival in a traffic-stopping couture gown that made her look every inch the scandal-free star.

And it seems the actress, who is out promoting her critically lauded role in "Rachel Getting Married" (Variety calls her "fragile, angry, superb"), had equally impeccable timing when she cut ties with the shifty Italian businessman on June 23.

Vanity Fair says that just six hours before federal agents carted Follieri, 30, away in handcuffs on fraud and money-laundering charges, the doe-eyed actress, 25, handed him his walking papers in an emotional tête-à-tête over the phone.

"You were the love of my life," she reportedly told him. "I'll always love you. You know that, baby."

It must have been love, because the mag says that in the four months leading up to their parting of ways, Hathaway, whose diaries were allegedly seized by the FBI as part of its investigation of Follieri, ponied up the $37,000 rent on his palatial New York digs (for the math-impaired, that's $148,000 -- for four measly months).

But some of the swankier aspects of their relationship may have been on Follieri's dime (or at least the dime of his purportedly duped, deep-pocketed investors).

Anne and Raffaello smile -- the former sweetly, the latter shiftily -- at the Oscars in February.

Vanity Fair details the $107,000 he spent on a private jet to wing them to a New Year's party at Oscar de La Renta's place in the Dominican Republic (Bill and Hillary Clinton and Mikhail Baryshnikov were among the guests), along with an exclusive dog-walking service for their beloved Labrador and vacations with the standard luxury yacht and lodging rentals.

There was also Raffaello's supposed generosity to those less fortunate (he founded the Follieri Foundation ostensibly to help poverty-stricken children in developing nations), a trait that Anne once praised in the pages of Harper's Bazaar.

"My boyfriend is incredible in a lot of ways," she said, "but when it comes to his charity ... One of the most untouted aphrodisiacs in the world is charity work. Seriously, you want a girl to be impressed, vaccinate some kids, build a house."

But not everyone was taken in by Follieri, who claimed that he was as tight with the Vatican as a nun with her wimple.

Hathaway's dad, Jerry, reportedly asked a private investigator pal to check out his little girl's smooth-talking suitor way back in 2005.

"I regard my involvement in this situation, regardless of its dimensions and level of interest, as fundamentally a private matter between a daughter and her father," Papa Hathaway tells the magazine.

But does Jerry need to do a little digging on someone new? Life & Style says Anne was looking cozy with actor Josh Lucas at the Democratic National Convention last week in Denver.

"They were really into each other, giggling and smiling and even holding hands at one point. You could almost taste their chemistry!" swoons an overexcited spy. "She looked beautiful and happy. Josh put his arm around her for a bit before they left."

Hathaway's rep, however, shoots down the romance rumblings as so much fiction.

Speaking of fiction, Us Weekly is convinced art imitated life on the set of the upcoming "Bride Wars," in which Anne dukes it out with rival aisle-walker Kate Hudson over their big day.

Anne films a scene for "Bride Wars" with Kate Hudson in New York.

"[Kate] was just awful to Anne," snipes a source. "Kate would give Anne notes, and once she even snapped her fingers at Anne!"

Another supposed source of ill will: Hathaway is rumored to have landed the January cover of Vogue -- solo -- to stump for the film.

But Hudson's mouthpiece adamantly denies any cattiness occurred, insisting to the mag, "She and Anne have always been good girlfriends and remain good girlfriends. This is ridiculous and couldn't be further from the truth."

In a recent sit-down with W, Kate commented on how their respective roles in the romcom mirrored their personalities.

"I play the classic extrovert, and she's the classic introvert," said Hudson. "She sort of goes with the flow, gets a bit walked over sometimes, while I'm that got-it-all-figured-out, everything-needs-to-be-done-my-way, take-care-of-everything type. And that's kind of how we are."

One thing the former flame of Owen Wilson and Lance Armstrong has "all figured out" (yes, it's a bad segue kind of day -- just go with it) is her relationship with ex-husband Chris Robinson, the father of her 4-year-old son, Ryder.

"Look -- we're still basically living together!" she tells Cosmopolitan, which features her on the October cover amid headlines blaring "How to Be Just Bitchy Enough" and -- eesh -- "Outrageous Things Chicks Do in Bed." "We've figured it out. I mean, obviously nothing's perfect, but I could never look at [our divorce] as a mistake. If anything, it's the best thing that ever happened to us."
