As with fashion, so with pop music: Styles and sounds that seemed relegated
to the distant past have a way of creeping up and becoming new and fresh again
every 20-30 years. The first folk music revival, in the late '50s and early
'60s, infused ... more the culture with a celebration of simplicity, tradition,
engagement and authenticity. As the more decadent sounds of acid rock and
psychedelia replaced folk on the pop charts, few would have predicted that this
kind of music would ever return to the prominence it had once enjoyed. And yet,
after several decades of being dominated by loud rock and dance beats, folk
appears to be having something of a renaissance in the world of music. More and
more younger bands are embracing the tradition (in however modified a fashion —
Peter, Paul and Mary they ain't) and audiences are responding in startling
numbers. The following gallery offers a brief introduction to a few of the
artists making the most impressive strides in this folk revival-revival, and a
reminder of a few of their important forebears.
