For Tim, being in INXS and playing to
100,000 people is "the most fun you can have with your pants on."
But on this first elimination episode of "Rock Star:INXS," one of
the Rockers won't be having any fun upon discovering that he or she
isn't the right singer for the band. It will be time to go home.
Tonight the three Rockers who received the lowest number of votes
from you, the viewers, are on the chopping block and INXS must
decide who will leave the show.
When they entered the studio, none of the Rockers knew the vote
tally -- they had no idea who was safe and who was vulnerable.
Sitting in their Rockers' box, just off the stage, everyone looked a
little wary. After all, this will be the last time one of them
appears on the "Rock Star:INXS" stage.
The first person called is J.D., who walks to center
stage like a boy about to be punished. As usual, he's wearing what
has quickly become his signature look: a black T-shirt emblazoned
with a personalized message (this time, it reads "Hardstar" on the
front and, on the back, "448," his lucky number). Dave quickly assures J.D.
he's not onstage because he's one of the bottom three. It's because
INXS considers him this week's "most improved performer," and as his
prize, J.D. gets to sing an encore of his impressive, modern-rock
arrangement of "California Dreamin'."
If possible, J.D. gives an even more impassioned performance than
on Tuesday night (it's amazing what even a brief glimpse into the
abyss can do to you). Once he's done, it's back to business, with Brooke holding an envelope
with the names of the three Rockers who could be going home: Wil, Tara and, for the second
time, Suzie. Dave is surprised
that Suzie is on the list. He feels her performance Tuesday was a
step in the right direction for her.
Looking very serious, Tim gives Wil, Tara and Suzie the lowdown.
They're up on stage because they either "don't have what it takes"
to be INXS's singer, or they "had a bad night." To help the band
decide -- and to give the vulnerable Rockers a chance to save
themselves -- each will sing an INXS song chosen for them by the
band. But there's no room for error this time. As Dave tells them,
if they can't take the pressure here, "how are you going to make it
in front of 100,000 people."
Tara is up first. Garry tells her that in the performance show,
she was a country girl. Now the band wants to see if she can rock,
so she's asked to sing "New Sensation." She takes full
advantage of this second chance, enjoying the opportunity to cut
loose. If INXS wanted to see whether she could rock, her version of
"New Sensation" shows a verve and commitment that was conspicuously
absent last night when she sang "Take It Easy."
Wil is next in the docket. Jon tells him that in his two previous
appearances he worked the camera at the expense of the live
audience. To see if he can truly connect with fans in a concert
setting, INXS wants him to perform "Need You Tonight."
It should have been a slam dunk. The song, INXS's first chart
topper, is all about connection -- it's a sweaty, desperate attempt
at seduction. But Wil appears to think that not playing to the
camera means not playing to anybody, and delivers a desultory
version of the song. He sings with all the passion of a man ordering
a nice, relaxing cup of tea.
At the opposite end of the spectrum is Suzie. She's up for
elimination for the second time in a week, and Tim wants to see how
she handles a song with a lot of emotion, so her assignment is "Never Tear Us Apart."
This song was always an INXS concert highlight, and feeling the
sting of being singled out again for elimination, Suzie steps up
with a devastating version of the song. She finds the great, gospel
scented, soul ballad at the song's center, delivering a beautifully
modulated performance that slowly builds to a passionate climax. It
puts everyone on notice that Suzie is determined to stick around,
and she doesn't want to be in the bottom three again.
After the three Rockers are done, it's left to INXS to make their
decision. "This is something we take very seriously," Tim says, and
it's obvious when you see them huddled together on their platform,
intently going over each of the three Rocker's strengths and
weaknesses.
They come to a decision, and Wil, Tara and Suzie are again
summoned to center stage. Suzie is the first Rocker given a
reprieve. "You nailed it," Tim tells her, and sends a teary Suzie
back to sit with the other Rockers, who greet her with hugs and high
fives. It's down to Tara and Wil. Tara proved she can rock, although
there are still worries about whether there's enough time to whip
her voice into shape. But she showed she could take direction,
something that Wil did not.
The decision is made. "You gave us the same performance," Tim
tells Wil, adding that he's just "not the right singer" for INXS, so
his Rock Star journey must come to an end.
Dave reminds him that this doesn't mean that he's without talent.
There are no doubts about that. He made it this far, which means
something. Andrew adds that he's sure this is not the last we've
heard from Wil. The North Carolinian returns their compliments
graciously, thanking the band, wishing them well and calling the
thirteen remaining Rockers "absolutely incredible."
With their number reduced by one, how will the Rockers respond?
How are things progressing at the Mansion? Now that song selection
has clearly become their most critical decision, what songs will
they choose and who will be sent home next week? Stay tuned and all
your questions will be answered.
