Performing at the South Africa Concert
Hailing from South Africa, Vusi Mahlasela's music has a mellow-yet-urgent
sound often described as African folk. Mahlasela started as a poet and was a
member of the Congress of South African Writers. Turning to music, his first
record, "When You Come Back," came out in 1991 , but America didn't get its
first taste of Mahlasela until the 2003 documentary "Amandla! A Revolution
in Four-Part Harmony." His appearance in the film led to the American release of
"The Voice," a collection of his songs, released later that year.
