Hip-hop's most unlikely patriarchs quickly moved from frat-boy favorites to
innovators after the 1989 release of "Paul's Boutique," which rewrote the
whole book on sampling in rap music. Since then they've maintained a frontline
presence in music by ruthlessly experimenting, even breaking the hip-hop code by
playing their own instruments. The Beastie Boys' last release, 2004's "To the 5 Boroughs," was their third straight number
one album.
